EoC 4: Welcome to the Stage

Hou Ying knew he’s doomed the moment he heard himself screaming!

But this is a human stress response! Instinct! He can’t control it at all!

He became stiff, and immediately wanted to escape. But when he turned around, Hou Ying found that there were at least five zombies standing behind him after screaming just now!

Hou Ying’s limbs went cold, it was only a microsecond but he suddenly thought of committing suicide—he would rather die than become a monster like these zombies.

His eyes were wide open, his pupils tightened in shock, and kept backing away.

Until there is no more place to retreat.

He stuck himself on the wall of the convenience store, wishing that he could disappear into this world immediately—he held his breath tightly, his whole body stiff, wanting himself to be thinner than paper and become transparent, or have anything in the world that could make him invisible to these zombies.

But what surprised him was that while he was waiting for death, it was as if God had heard his prayer, and no zombie rushed to bite him.

The back of Hou Ying’s neck was soaked in cold sweat, sliding into his eyes. He closed his eyes, but quickly opened them forcibly, for fear of being bitten to death by these zombies when they were out of sight. But he still couldn’t help blinking his eyes, the sweat made his eyes hurt, and the eyeballs were stung, making them water.

He wondered why he had to suffer in this place alive. The fear of facing unmanageable danger made him cowardly.

But soon he thought of his nephew who depends on him—he must be still alive and looking forward to his return.

He felt guilty when he thought of this, detesting his cowardice.

Moreover, there is a child in his car outside who is incapable of surviving on his own. If he dies, he’s either bitten by a zombie or starved to death—this kind of death is too tragic, any adult with conscience can’t stand idly by such things.

Hou Ying moved his feet tentatively, and the zombies that seemed to be paused, stared at his feet following his movements. Hou Ying’s hairs stood up, before he could react, the zombies seemed to have flipped some switches, and began to repeat the slow movements before, even completely ignoring him.

Hou Ying moved a few steps with his hands and feet in sync, found that these zombies had really completely ignored him, and he was both perplexed and scared.

He tentatively made a little sound, the zombies would look back at him like before, but turn away faster and faster, and finally simply ignored Hou Ying.

What’s going on?

Hou Ying didn’t have many false alarms in his whole life, but there was a terrible feeling that made him chill from the bones.

But he didn’t have time to think too much. After discovering that these zombies didn’t intend to bite him, Hou Ying couldn’t help but calm down a lot, and continued to put things he could get into the bag—he had thought about what should be the target before, but now he can’t remember the priority at all, so he can only indiscriminately shove as much as he can take.

He didn’t stop until he couldn’t carry the bags anymore with both hands, even using his mouth to bite onto something, the veins in his arms and jaw bulging, and moving out quickly.

Meng Hanghai was scared when he heard the scream. He wanted to rush out to see what was going on, but he didn’t. He just lay on the car window and tried to look into the convenience store.

The ignorant child already vaguely understands that he cannot get in the way of the adults. If Hou Ying was bitten by a zombie and turned into a monster like his father, he would not be able to save him. If Hou Ying still had the possibility of escape, he would only harm him if he went out.

When Meng Hanghai was about to collapse due to shock and panic, suddenly Hou Ying appeared in his sight, holding a bunch of things.

Meng Hanghai was overjoyed, immediately opened the car door and waved to Hou Ying. Hou Ying’s car is just outside the convenience store and he exerted all his effort. He rushed up a few steps and threw the things he was holding into the car. Meng Hanghai hurriedly helped him catch it while crying.

The thing on Hou Ying’s mouth was released. Just as he was about to say something, he saw the originally “tame” zombies in the convenience store suddenly going crazy and rushed towards their car! Hou Ying was taken aback. Regardless of the bag that fell on the ground, he pressed Meng Hanghai’s head back into the car, and shouted, “Hurry up!”

He got back into the car, closed the door tightly, and started the engine.

He has never felt that the commercial Audi has been on fire for such a long time!1

The zombies who were grunting seemed to have “woke up”. All the zombies, whether inside or outside the convenience store, rushed to the car, hitting and biting, and after a while, they bit off the two rearview mirrors2. In Hou Ying’s eyes, it was as if they were biting on his neck, he could almost feel the pain of fracture!

Meng Hanghai was crying behind him, and he couldn’t help making a whimpering sound, just like the cry he made when Hou Ying first met him, panicked but enduring.

The car was almost stuck. Hou Ying clenched his teeth, stepped on the gas pedal to the maximum, and dashed for no less than ten times. After running over countless zombies, he finally broke through a small gap and drove out as fast as he could.

After the zombie’s attack just now,  the co-pilot’s window has been completely broken, and the two mirrors in the rear compartment have also been seriously damaged, leaving only the windshield and the mirror next to the main driver with only a few cobweb-like cracks.

Hou Ying desperately rushed to the highway, a few bags of food on the co-pilot seat flew out of the window, making Hou Ying so distressed but could do nothing about it—even without the rearview mirrors on both sides, he knew that the zombies were still chasing them because he could clearly hear their increasingly excited screams.

However, the boy Meng Hanghai is very courageous at this time, he suddenly rushed to pick up the food piled on the passenger seat so it won’t fly out the window, going to waste after working hard getting it.

Seeing Meng Hanghai looking back at the group of zombies chasing after them, he hugged the driver’s seat tightly and stared at Hou Ying with fear. He could no longer speak, even forgetting to cry, Hou Ying was relieved and sad.

At this moment, his belief in survival was stronger than ever.

They didn’t know that on the highway in the distance, on a military armored off-road vehicle rushing towards the Jianghai service area, a man in a military uniform lying on the roof of the car and watching suddenly said, “There is a situation! About a kilometer ahead, there is a driving sound, which is suspected of being a survivor.”

The person covering his eyes closed and resting in the co-driver seat suddenly opened his eyes and looked at the other person who was driving. The latter gritted his teeth and said, “Go and see.” Speaking in the military Bluetooth earpiece, “Sit firmly.” Then speeded up and drove forward.

The man on the roof kept reporting the situation until 200 meters, when his voice just fell off, the person in the co-pilot said impatiently, “I heard it!”

At such a close distance, the car in front was racing for their life, they could hear it without the aid of supernatural hearing.

But before he expressed his dissatisfaction, the person on the roof said again: “Attention! The speed of the zombies ahead has changed!” When the car was approaching, he suddenly said, “The fastest is as fast as me. There is also a zombie caught on the door of the survivor’s vehicle, please be alert!”

Hou Ying saw the army-green vehicle rushing into his field of vision. He hadn’t rejoiced yet and had no time to react when he heard a bang, then a disgusting mucus flew into the car and stuck to his face.

Hou Ying froze, watched the army-green car pass him by, and then made a harsh brake sound!

Then, intensive gunfire sounded!

Hou Ying slammed the brakes. The excellent commercial Audi dashed forward more than ten meters before stopping, which shows how fast he was just now.

He opened the car door in a panic and looked back. The off-road vehicle that had passed his car just stopped on the road in front of him. The gunshots continued. The car became a line of fire that could not be crossed, shooting all the approaching zombies in the head and falling to the ground without resistance.

He subconsciously touched his face, and then reacted dully. What splashed on his face was the brain of the fastest zombie who chased them all the way and grabbed his car door—

“!”

Hou Ying bent down and retched.

The dumbfounded Meng Hanghai came back to his senses at this time, and hurriedly asked, “Uncle Hou?!” Hou Ying waved his hand weakly. Fortunately, Meng Hanghai was young but very caring. He found a tissue from the car and handed it to him, also passing a water bottle to him.

In fact, Hou Ying wanted to take a shower and wash away the zombies’ brain on his face and neck, but now he knew the preciousness of drinking water, so he could only wipe his face and neck with a tissue, wishing he could rub a piece of skin off.

The firepower ahead came to an end, and the zombies behind were not fast enough to rush up. A man in military uniform jumped from the driver’s seat and walked to Hou Ying’s car, then another female soldier opened the door and jumped out of the car.

“Hey, what’s your name, where are you from?”

Hou Ying recognized the military uniforms on these two people as the Marine Corps uniforms rather than those worn by ordinary policemen. Hou Ying was greatly relieved by the green uniform, they are the most wonderful people to rely on in this kind of crisis. But looking at the distance between them and himself, they can attack them and retreat at any time, Hou Ying naturally found that their saviors were on guard against himself. Hou Ying gasped, waved his hand to signal to Meng Hanghai that it was safe, and let him come down quickly.

Sure enough, when the other party saw that there was a young child in the car, he stepped forward.

Hou Ying said, “My surname is Hou, Hou Ying. This child is Meng Hanghai, I am from Yecheng. This child should have escaped from Hucheng.”

Hou Ying noticed that the two people’s expressions suddenly changed when they heard the word “Hucheng”. Meng Hanghai was very sensitive and got scared to hide behind Hou Ying.

Hou Ying didn’t know what they’re thinking, but look, they’re soldiers, and they also saved them. From time to time, the people in the car ahead shot and killed zombies. Obviously, they were more kind than malicious, so he took the initiative to say, “Him and I met at the Jianghai Service Station in front. None of us were bitten by the zombies, and we brought some food out from there.”

Their eyes brightened, knowing they hadn’t been bitten by a zombie they loosened their guard against them.

The male officer said, “I’m sorry, brother, we don’t mean anything else, but we are afraid that you were bitten and it will be difficult to deal with the virus.”

He gave the female officer a wink and introduced, “My name is Jiang Tao and her name is Gongsun Jing. We and the comrades in the car are special forces of the 24th Division of East China. We took the task of disaster relief in Hucheng before, you must know that there is no difference between there and hell now. All of us escaped after nine deaths.”

When Meng Hanghai heard this, he stared at these two people.

The word ‘Hucheng’ also touched this child who had just experienced the fright and hadn’t been yet relieved. Before Hou Ying could express further, Gongsun Jing, who had confirmed that there was a lot of food in the car, had already whistled, “That’s great!”

She glanced at Hou Ying and the child huddled behind him, and said to the front, “Lao Er3, come here!”

Hou Ying noticed that Gongsun Jing’s volume was just the same loudness as when they were talking, but the person lying on the roof of the car moved in response, and after jumping off, he came to them in a flash. His eyes widened in shock, startled by his superhuman, no, unscientific speed. He subconsciously took a step back and almost toppled over Meng Hanghai behind him.

Gongsun Jing smiled when she saw it, and took the unopened mineral water from Hou Ying’s car and handed it to the person who had just arrived and was called the second child. The latter unceremoniously unscrewed it and drank the water directly.

Hou Ying heard a man’s rude curse from their earpiece, and then a man with a gun strapped on his chest got out from the co-pilot seat and jumped to the roof, raising his middle finger in their direction.

Translator’s Notes:

  1. 侯颖同手同脚地挪动几步 – I seriously don’t know how to translate this, it confused the heck out of me. Can someone take a crack on this?
  2. The author put rearview mirrors (不过一会儿就把两侧的后视镜给咬了下来) but I think they’re referring to side view mirrors or the mirrors behind??
  3. I just left this in pinyin because it sounds awkward in English being called ‘Second’. In the future, the nicknames and titles would be left in pinyin (if necessary) because sometimes it’s cumbersome to write it and awkward to read/say in rl. And oh, haha, just wanna share this, Baidu translated this part as the second oldest of two or more (male) siblings and penis hahahha.

I’m so sorry this chapter is so late, I just forgot the date. In compensation, I will double the update this Sunday so look forward to it~
